Meeting: Saturday February 19, 2005 5:30 PM. Be sure to work on the group tunes!
What a fun group we had at the January meeting! Lots of interesting conversations and new music, and it's really a delight to hear it all.
I had the privilege of meeting some new dulcimer folks recently. One has just moved to Tulsa in recent weeks, and some others just bought dulcimers for the first time. It will be fun to meet and greet them and include them into our happy group. Keep your eyes open at the next meeting, and if there is someone there you don't know, please introduce yourself and make them feel welcome.
Upcoming events are the Winter Festival of Acoustic Music (WinterFest) at the First Methodist Church in Irving TX on February 11-12 (contact Joe Morgan at jmm1(at)flash.net Note 1), the OWDC's annual String Fling on Feb 26th (contact Christina Connell at connell(at)cox-internet.com Note 1), and then a big one in Arkansas at Ozark Folk Center April 19-23 (go to http://www.ozarkfolkcenter.com and click on events). Lots of things coming up also in May, June, July, etc., so stay tuned for more announcements.
Our next meeting will be February 19th at Yale Avenue Christian Church, SW corner of 36th and Yale in Tulsa. See you there!
Dennis.
Note 1: from Dana, to keep spammers from picking up the email addresses above, I substituted "(at)" instead of the @ character. You will need to use @ to email these people, who doubtless would love to hear from you, but not from spammers!
I have to give full credit to Becky Masoner for this one! She asked: can put an MP3 of the tunes on the website along with the tabs?
Absolutely! Since we have no significant restrictions on the disk space we can use with our website, you bet! Greate idea Becky! Now if somebody doesnt know the tunes or "how the B part goes" or some such, here is a great way to find out. So then the next great idea!
Lets record these ourselves! No need to copy somebodys copyrighted performances.. lets record these at the meetings. That means you may get asked to be the "star" for a tune! Practice up! By doing our own recordings we will be able to provide examples of the tune at various skill levels. Lets see what we can do!
Also feel free to suggest a tunes for the coming months at the meeting. Have a favorite?
Dana
If you don't know then, now is a chance to learn these common tunes. At the end of the year we should be able to play 12 tunes as a group! Now if you are a beginner, just learn the melody, if you are an advance player, learn a harmony! Learn to chord the tunes as well as play the melody. During the group section try not to play the various parts you have learned. Use this as an opportunity to play in a group!
| Month: | Tune common name: | Key: |
| January | Greensleves | Em |
| February | Irish Washer Woman | D |
| March | Arkansas Travler | D |
Be aware that getting TAB ready for the newsletter, or live recordings takes a lot of extra time, please help! Contribute, create TAB's for the group and submit them!
There are two programs available on the internet you may be interested in. Both of these programs can be downloaded for free and come from trustworthy sources.
The first is "audacity", which allows audio recording and editing on a PC. The program is absolutely free of charge, advertising, etc. It was produced as part of the GNU project. This link was forwarded by Becky Masoner - thanks Becky!
The second program is "TextPad", a basic editor which I used to create "text" mountain dulicmer tabs. This is by far the best program out there for viewing and editing text files, it is "shareware", and they would like to get paid a very nominal fee for the use of the program.
Both of these programs will be used in creating the files posted for download. If you know of any other freeware, or honorware such as these that is useful for dulcimer players, please let me know and I will add references to them.
See the photos from January!

See you at the meeting!
